Our History

Under the leadership of Reverend H. C. Mack, Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church started as a Mission in 1935 at 19th and L Street, N.W., Washington DC.  The church later moved to 911 4th Street, N.W., Washington DC., under the leadership of Reverend Weaver, they moved to 1600 8th Street N.W.

On August 26, 1938, in the home of the late Deacon and Mrs. Samuel McCullough, the Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church was officially organized and the late Reverend Dr. James L. Bennett was called as Pastor with eight members on the roll. Six members left, and two of the eight remaining, Brother William Shumate and Brother Samuel McCullough, were appointed as Deacons and Deacon McCullough was appointed Chairman of the Deacon Board.

Sister Geneva Bennett was the first member to join Mt. Calvary under Reverend Bennett’s leadership. The late Brother James W. Jeter, Sr. and the late Sister Lela B. Newsome joined in 1938, and the late Sister Georgia Lilly joined in 1939. The church was again relocated to Fourth and L Streets, N.W., where they worshipped in the lower auditorium until the building was damaged by fire in 1944. They then moved to Sixth and P Streets, N.W. to the Springfield  Baptist Church, where they also worshipped in the lower auditorium. The church remained at 6th and P Streets, N.W. until 1945 when they were able to purchase the building located at 432 M Street, N.W., Washington, DC.

On December 31, 1961, with over 600 members having been added to the Church Roll, we were able to motorcade to 801 North Carolina Avenue, S.E. under the leadership of the late Reverend James L. Bennett. Our Chief Usher, Deacon James W. Jeter, Sr. (deceased), led the motorcade. On August 17, 1974, we had the Mortgage Burning Service still under the leadership of Pastor Bennett. Under the leadership of the late Pastor Emeritus Bennett, twenty-four groups were organized. These groups are as follows—not necessarily in the order of formation: Senior Choir, Deacon Board, Trustee Board, Senior Usher Board, Builders Club, J. L. Bennett Club, No. 2 Usher Board, Nurse’s Unit, Gospel Chorus, Sacred Echoes, No. 3 Usher Board, Women’s Chorus, Male Chorus, No. 2 Choir, Willing Workers Club, Baptist Training Union (BTU), Missionary Circle, Prayer Band, Junior Usher Board, Youth Chorus, Gospel Angels, Youth Department, Flower Club, and Sunday School.

On September 22, 1974, due to illness, Reverend James L. Bennett resigned as Pastor Emeritus of the Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church. The late Pastor Emeritus James L. Bennett departed this life in May 1975. Pastor Bennett, we thank you for a job well done.

The Church was without a Pastor for one year. During that year, Chairman of the Deacon Board the late Deacon Benjamin Wright, was in charge.

In September 1976, Reverend J. P. Blair was elected as Pastor of Mt. Calvary and on the first Sunday in December of that year was installed. The Church grew under Pastor Blair’s leadership and many members were united to this Branch of Zion.

The Church grew under his spiritual leadership and relocated on Saturday, August 26, 1995 to our current location at 5000 St. Barnabas Road, Temple Hills, Maryland by way of motorcade. Approximately a year, or less, after our move to 5000 St. Barnabas Road, we learned that due to another church in Maryland having the same name as us, we added Missionary which is why we are now called Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church.

Reverend Hercules S. Jones was elected as Pastor after serving as Interim Pastor for one year. He was installed on Sunday, April 2, 2000.

Reverend Larry Phillip McCray was elected and called as our sixth Pastor on Sunday, August 19, 2006. He was installed on Sunday, December 3, 2006. The Hand of God has been upon him and us to take Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church to Higher Heights and Deeper Depths in Christ. Since serving as Pastor at Mt. Calvary many new members have been added to the Church.

Rev. John Daniel Sawyer was officially elected on July 9, 2022 to serve as Pastor.
